How a Companion Thinks

The evening seen from her side, what a companion notices, what makes it good for her, and what she quietly wishes more gentlemen understood

Almost everything written for gentlemen about fine company is written from the gentleman's side of the evening: how he should prepare, what he should choose, how he might arrive well. It is rarer to turn the picture around and consider the evening from the other chair, and yet doing so is one of the most useful things a gentleman can do, because understanding how a companion experiences an evening is precisely what makes a man better company within it.

So this is a piece written, as it were, from her perspective. Not the words of any one companion, but a reflection of what the women we represent tell us, over years of conversation, about how they see the evenings they share and the gentlemen they share them with. It is offered in the same spirit as everything in these pages: to help gentlemen understand, and in understanding, to become the kind of company a companion genuinely looks forward to.

She is there by choice, and glad to be

The first thing worth understanding, because it changes everything that follows, is that the companions we represent are intelligent, capable women who have chosen this work and take a genuine professional pride in it. They are not enduring the evening; they are, when it is done well, enjoying it. A companion is not a passive presence to be entertained but an active participant with her own perceptions, preferences and pleasures, and the evenings she remembers warmly are as real to her as they are to the gentleman.

This matters because it reframes the whole encounter. A gentleman who understands that his companion is a person with her own experience of the evening, rather than simply a lovely accompaniment to his, approaches her differently, and she feels the difference at once. The companions we work with are drawn to their work by the genuine pleasures it offers, good company, fine occasions, interesting people, and the gentleman who lets those pleasures be real for her is the one she is most glad to see.

To think of a companion as a professional who has chosen her work and takes pride in it, rather than as anything less, is the beginning of understanding how she thinks. Everything else follows from that simple, respectful recognition.

What she notices

A companion notices a great deal, often more than the gentleman imagines, because attentiveness is part of her craft. And what she notices is rarely what a man expects.

She notices presence far more than wealth. As we have written before, the details that register are the human ones: whether a gentleman is genuinely present or distractedly elsewhere, whether he is warm or merely correct, whether he is at ease or tightly wound. The size of the gesture matters far less to her than the quality of the attention behind it.

She notices how she is treated, and how others are. The courtesy a gentleman extends to her, and just as tellingly the courtesy he extends to waiters and staff, tells her almost everything about his character, and she reads it instantly. Warmth and consideration are noticed and warmly returned; their absence is noticed too.

And she notices the small considerations that show an evening was thought about, the punctuality, the good grooming, the care taken, the sense that the occasion was looked forward to rather than slotted in. None of these is difficult, and all of them communicate respect, which is, more than anything, what a companion hopes to feel from the gentleman she is with.

A companion is not enduring the evening; when it is done well, she is enjoying it. She is a person with her own experience of the night, and the gentleman who lets that be real is the one she is most glad to see.

What makes an evening good for her

The evenings a companion remembers warmly are, it turns out, very much the same evenings a gentleman remembers warmly, which is a happy symmetry worth understanding.

Ease is the heart of it. An evening in which she feels comfortable, respected and genuinely at ease is a good evening for her, just as it is for him. The gentleman who puts her at ease, through his warmth, his courtesy and his unhurried presence, is giving her the same gift she is practised at giving him, and it is received with real appreciation.

Genuine engagement makes an evening come alive for her. A companion, like anyone, enjoys a real conversation, a genuine connection, the pleasure of being interested in and interested by the person across from her. The evenings that drag are the ones with no true exchange; the evenings that fly are the ones where two people actually meet. Her enjoyment, like his, lives on the quality of the connection between them.

And being treated as a person rather than a presence is, above all, what makes an evening good for her. The gentleman who is curious about her, who listens, who treats her with genuine respect and warmth, gives her an evening she is glad to have shared. It is, in the end, the same thing that makes an evening good for anyone: to be valued, engaged with and treated well.

What she wishes gentlemen understood

If there is one thing the companions we represent would wish gentlemen to understand, it is this: relax, and simply be yourself. So much of the awkwardness that occasionally attends an evening comes from a gentleman trying too hard, performing, straining to impress, when the companion would far rather meet the real man, at ease.

She is on your side. A companion wants the evening to go well every bit as much as the gentleman does, and she is skilled at helping it do so. There is no test to pass and no performance required; she is a warm and willing participant in making the evening a pleasure, and a gentleman may relax into that rather than laboring against it.

She does not expect perfection. A little nervousness, a moment of awkwardness, a first-timer's uncertainty, none of these trouble her in the least, and she meets them with warmth rather than judgement. The pressure a gentleman puts on himself is almost always greater than anything she brings to the evening.

And her discretion is as important to her as yours is to you. A companion values the privacy of the arrangement for her own sake as much as the gentleman's, and a man who understands and respects that, who extends to her the same discretion he expects, is a gentleman she trusts and welcomes. Respect, ease and genuine warmth are, in the end, all she hopes for, and they are entirely within any gentleman's power to give.

A practical guide to being the company she looks forward to

For gentlemen who would like to be the client a companion is genuinely glad to see, this is our plainest guidance.

See her as a person. Approach your companion as the intelligent, capable woman she is, with her own experience of the evening. That recognition changes everything, and she feels it at once.

Bring presence over grandeur. What she notices is the quality of your attention, not the size of your gesture. Be genuinely present, warm and engaged, and you have given her the thing that matters most.

Extend courtesy to everyone. How you treat her, and how you treat the staff, tells her who you are. Warmth and consideration are always noticed, and always returned.

Relax, and be yourself. She is on your side, she expects no perfection, and she would far rather meet the real man at ease than a performance. Trying too hard is the one unnecessary effort.

Respect her discretion as your own. Her privacy matters to her as yours does to you. The gentleman who honours it is the one she trusts and welcomes back.

The evening from both sides

To understand how a companion thinks is, in the end, to understand something rather simple and rather reassuring: that she hopes for much the same things the gentleman does. Ease, warmth, genuine connection, mutual respect, an evening in which both people feel valued and comfortable and glad of each other's company. The symmetry is the whole point. The evening that is good for her is very nearly the same evening that is good for him, and the gentleman who grasps that holds the key to being the finest kind of company.

There is no mystery to it, and no difficult art. A companion thinks, most of all, as anyone would in her place: she hopes to be treated well, engaged with genuinely and respected fully, and she returns all of it, generously, to the gentleman who offers it. Understanding that is the surest way to an evening both will remember warmly, which is, after all, what everyone hopes for.

Should you wish to share such an evening, in the company of one of the companions we are proud to represent, our team is always glad to arrange it, with the same care and respect on every side.
